ABOUT APPLESHARE 3.6.1 PATCH

Connectix has identified a problem with AppleShare 3.6.1 that occurs when copying from an AppleShare volume. The problem can lead to a system crash or file corruption of copied files. This has been independently identified by Apple. Since a fix will not be available for an undetermined amount of time, Connectix is distributing this Patch as a fix for users of AppleShare 3.6.1.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLESHARE 3.6.1 PATCH

Any Mac configuration with AppleShare 3.6.1 Extension installed and System 7.5.1 or later. (do a “Get Info” on the AppleShare extension to determine the version.) AppleShare 3.6.1 is installed by either:

  • The AppleShare Workstation 3.6.1 Installer or,
  • The PowerBook 5300 System Software Update or,
  • Any System Software version later than 7.5.2.

HOW TO INSTALL THE PATCH

Drop the AppleShare 3.6.1 Patch into the Extensions folder of the System Folder and restart. The Patch performs the fix only if AppleShare 3.6.1 is installed. If another version of AppleShare is installed, then the patch does not take affect.

WHAT THE PATCH FIXES

Appleshare version 3.6.1 incorporates a performance tweak that accelerates Finder copies in System 7.5.1. In order to do this, AppleShare allocates memory during the Mac operating system’s “Read” call. This behavior is contrary to that predicted by Inside Macintosh, and will affect any utility that assumes memory does not move during I/O operations to remote AppleShare volumes.
Specifically, this AppleShare 3.6.1 behavior affects Connectix Speed Copy 1.1 or earlier. During a copy from an AppleShare volume, the first 16K or so of a copied file may be copied incorrectly. This problem does not affect copies between non-AppleShare volumes.
The Patch fixes the problem by limiting AppleShare’s performance tweaks to the specific cases where the Finder is making copies.
